About this scholarship

What this award covers and who it is designed to support.

The most prestigious scholarship offered by Japan’s Ministry of Education. It covers all tuition and fees, provides round‑trip airfare, and gives a generous monthly stipend. It is available through two routes: embassy recommendation (apply in your home country) and university recommendation (apply through the Japanese university you wish to enter)

Nationality: Non‑Japanese
Age: Usually under 35 at the time of application
Education: Bachelor’s degree for Master’s applicants; Master’s degree for Doctoral applicants
Residence: Generally not residing in Japan at the time of application
Academic record: GPA of at least 2.30 on a 3.00 scale is often required
