The eligibility criteria is as follows:
- Must be nominated by one Canadian university with an available Vanier quota Vanier Canada Graduate ScholarshipsVanier Canada Graduate Scholarships
- Pursuing a first doctoral degree (joint graduate programs eligible in PhD portion only) Vanier Canada Graduate Scholarshipscms.cloudfront.ualberta.ca
- Must have completed no more than 20 months of doctoral study (or 32 months for joint programs) by May 1 of the competition year

The requirements are as follows:

- Step 2: Submit application via ResearchNet including:
- Canadian Common CV (CCV)
- Research Proposal (2 pages English; 2.5 pages in French)
- Personal Leadership Statement (same length rules)
- Research Contributions (1 page)
- Transcripts & Project References (up to 5 pages)
- Two leadership letters of reference (max 2 pages each)
- Optional Special Circumstances statement (1 page)
