About this program
What this degree covers and what you can expect from the university.
This full‑time English‑taught Master of Materials Science and Engineering (Science) is delivered by the Institute for Advanced Study at
Shenzhen University, located in Shenzhen within the Guangdong‑Hong‑Kong‑Macao Greater Bay Area. This research‑oriented postgraduate programme focuses on frontier material‑science research closely connected with local high‑end manufacturing industry development. Major research directions cover functional advanced materials, energy‑related materials, nanomaterials, material characterisation technology and new‑material application exploration. The programme aims to cultivate international‑oriented high‑level research talents who master systematic theoretical knowledge of materials science, possess hands‑on laboratory operation capability, material‑performance analysis skills, independent scientific‑research thinking and cross‑cultural academic communication competence. The curriculum framework includes advanced postgraduate core courses, discipline‑focused elective modules, regular frontier academic seminars, laboratory rotation training, supervisor‑led research‑project participation and master‑degree thesis work. Core courses consist of Advanced Materials Science, Nanomaterial Preparation and Characterisation, Energy Materials Research Progress, Material Testing and Analytical Methods, Scientific Research Methodology for Natural Science, Academic Writing and Thesis Standardisation, and serial thematic seminars tracking worldwide hot‑spot material‑science research trends. During full‑time study ranging from 2 to 3 academic years, students need to complete compulsory and elective credit requirements, take part in institute‑level academic forums, finish multi‑group laboratory rotation practice, join faculty‑managed research projects and accumulate practical experimental experience. Every admitted student will receive one‑on‑one academic guidance from a faculty supervisor. Under supervisor direction, students will conduct comprehensive literature review, research‑scheme design, sample preparation, multi‑dimensional performance testing, experimental‑data statistics‑analysis, research‑result organisation and academic‑paper drafting, and finally complete original master graduation thesis and pass thesis defence. Applicants shall submit authenticated bachelor‑degree certificate and complete official academic transcript issued by accredited higher‑education institutions. Applicants holding materials‑science, chemistry, physics and other STEM‑related backgrounds receive priority consideration. Non‑native‑English‑speaking applicants need valid English‑language certificates: IELTS overall 6.5 or TOEFL iBT 90 and above. Applicants who have completed full‑degree programmes fully taught in English can apply for language‑score exemption with official supporting documents subject to university review. Applicant age should generally not exceed 35 years‑old, and physical‑mental health condition must satisfy medical‑examination criteria for Chinese student visa. After fulfilling all curriculum requirements and passing thesis defence, graduates will obtain official master‑degree diploma issued by Shenzhen University. Graduates can engage in research‑work within international material‑research institutes, high‑tech new‑material enterprises, cross‑border technology consulting organisations, or pursue further doctoral‑level study globally.
