Master of Materials Science and Engineering
About this program
What this degree covers and what you can expect from the university.
This full‑time research‑driven English‑taught Master of Materials Science and Engineering programme is provided by Department of Materials Science and Engineering of Southern University of Science and Technology. Centering on advanced‑material‑research demands of Greater Bay Area high‑end‑manufacturing industry, this programme covers multiple important research directions: functional‑materials, energy‑storage‑materials, semiconductor‑materials, nano‑materials, advanced‑structural‑materials, material‑processing‑technology and material‑chara
cterisation‑analysis technology. The programme aims to cultivate international‑oriented high‑level material‑science‑research‑talents, who systematically master fundamental theories of materials‑science‑and‑engineering discipline, possess solid material‑preparation‑experiment‑operation capability, material‑performance‑characterisation‑analysis skills, independent‑scientific‑research‑innovation awareness and cross‑border academic‑co‑operation consciousness. Curriculum framework includes advanced postgraduate core courses, discipline‑specialised elective modules, frontier‑material‑science academic‑seminars, multi‑research‑group laboratory rotation training, supervisor‑led scientific‑research‑project participation and master‑degree‑thesis‑research. Core courses contain Advanced Materials‑Science, Functional‑Material‑Physics‑and‑Chemistry, Energy‑Material‑Research Progress, Nanomaterial‑Preparation‑and‑Characterisation, Semiconductor‑Material‑Technology, Material‑Structure‑Analysis‑Method, Engineering‑Science‑Research‑Methodology, Academic‑Paper‑Writi
ng‑Standardisation, alongside thematic seminars tracing global advanced‑material‑research hot‑spot topics. During three‑year full‑time study period, students need to complete all compulsory and elective course‑credit requirements, take part in department‑organised academic‑forums, finish multi‑group laboratory‑rotation‑practice, participate in faculty‑led material‑science‑research‑projects, and accumulate substantial hands‑on material‑synthesis‑and‑characterisation‑experimental‑experience. Each admitted master‑student will receive one‑on‑one academic‑guidance from a faculty supervisor with rich high‑level material‑science‑project‑research‑experience. Under supervisor’s guidance, students will finish comprehensive‑literature‑review, research‑subject‑demonstration, material‑preparation‑scheme‑design, sample‑synthesis‑and‑processing, multi‑dimensional‑material‑performance‑testing‑and‑characterisation‑analysis, experimental‑data‑sorting‑and‑statistics‑processing, academic‑article‑drafting and independent master‑dissertation‑research‑work. Applicants must provide authenticated
bachelor‑degree‑certificate and complete official academic‑transcript issued by recognised higher‑education‑institutions. Applicants with materials‑science, chemistry, physics, mechanical‑engineering or other STEM‑related academic‑background are preferred for admission assessment. Non‑native‑English‑speaking applicants shall submit valid English‑proficiency‑documents: IELTS overall band 6.5 (no sub‑score below 6.0), TOEFL iBT ≥90. Applicants who hold prior full‑degree qualification fully delivered in English may apply for language‑score‑exemption, by submitting official supporting‑documents for university‑administrative‑review. Applicant age shall not exceed 35‑years‑old at application‑time, physical‑mental‑health condition must satisfy medical‑check‑requirements for Chinese‑student‑visa‑application. After fulfilling all curriculum‑assessment‑criteria and successfully passing master‑thesis‑defence, graduates will obtain official master‑degree‑diploma issued by Southern University of Science and Technology. Graduates can engage in material‑science‑researc
h‑work within international material‑research‑institutes, global advanced‑material‑high‑tech‑enterprises, cross‑border new‑material‑consulting‑organisations, or pursue further doctoral‑level‑academic‑study all over the world.
