About this program

What this degree covers and what you can expect from the university.

This full‑time research‑focused English‑medium Master of Complex System and Data Science programme is hosted by Institute for Advanced Study of Shenzhen University. As an interdisciplinary subject, it integrates computer science, mathematics, statistics, system‑science and big‑data analytical technology. Main research directions include complex‑system modelling, large‑scale data mining, machine‑learning application, complex‑network analysis, multi‑sour
ce heterogeneous‑data processing, intelligent‑system simulation and data‑driven decision‑making research. This programme commits to fostering international‑oriented interdisciplinary high‑level talents, who grasp solid mathematical and computational theoretical foundation, master large‑dataset processing, data‑mining and algorithm‑development practical skills, own independent research‑innovation awareness and cross‑cultural academic‑exchange capacity. Curriculum comprises advanced core postgraduate courses, specialised elective modules, frontier interdisciplinary academic seminars, research‑group rotation, supervisor‑guided scientific‑research projects and master‑dissertation research. Core courses contain Advanced Complex‑System Theory, Big‑Data Mining and Analysis, Machine‑Learning Theory and Practice, Complex‑Network Modelling, High‑Performance Computing, Research Methodology for Interdisciplinary Science, Academic Paper Writing and Standardisation, plus serial seminars following global cutting‑edge complex‑system‑and‑data‑science hot‑spot topics. Within 2‑3‑year full‑time study period, students are required to finish all credit requirements, participate in institute‑organised academic conferences, complete multiple research‑group rotations, take part in faculty‑led research projects and accumulate abundant programming, data‑processing and system‑simulation practical experience. Each enrolled student will be assigned a supervisor with rich interdisciplinary‑project research experience. Under supervisor guidance, students will carry out comprehensive literature survey, research‑problem definition, model construction, algorithm realisation, large‑dataset experimental‑verification, data‑analysis‑and‑result‑interpretation, academic‑article writing and independent master‑thesis‑completion work. Applicants are required to provide authenticated bachelor‑degree certificate and complete official academic transcript from recognised higher‑education institutions. Applicants with computer‑science, mathematics, statistics, data‑science and other STEM‑related backgrounds will obtain priority in admission assessment. Non‑native‑English‑speaking applicants need valid English‑proficiency certification: IELTS overall band 6.5 or TOEFL iBT ≥90. Applicants with prior full‑degree education fully delivered in English can apply for language‑score exemption by submitting official supporting‑documents for university internal review. Applicant age generally shall not exceed 35 years‑old and physical‑mental health must satisfy Chinese student‑visa medical‑check‑standards. After completing all curriculum assessment criteria and successfully passing master‑thesis defence, graduates receive official master‑degree diploma awarded by Shenzhen University.
